I think many of us are at a total loss to understand what on earth propels anybody to believe that McCain's choice of Vice President was well considered, well vetted - or even appropriate.
Deepak Chopra's article - link and a quote below - finally explains it to me (Please read the whole article)
Obama is asking for us to reach our "better angels" within ourself - be concerned about our fellow man/woman/child - try to follow in the steps/shoes of the fisherman.
The comparison is stark - because what is on the other side is not comparing ourselves to the very best - but to the very base - the underbelly of what is acceptable behaviour. What is good just for ourselves.

and this is why it appeals to so many in this day of "looking out for number 1" - the ones that say -- I have mine health insurance/college education/house/money - if you don't - tough
Isn't that just about as Republican as you can get. (but not very christian)
To me - this explains it - and I think we are in for the fight of our life. It is a fight about values - and it is also a fight for what kind of America we will have next year --

She is the reverse of Barack Obama, in essence his shadow, deriding his idealism and turning negativity into a cause for pride. In psychological terms the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of "the other." For millions of Americans, Obama triggers those feelings, but they don’t want to express them. He is calling for us to reach for our higher selves, and frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind. (Just to be perfectly clear, I am not making a verbal play out of the fact that Sen. Obama is black. The shadow is a metaphor widely in use before his arrival on the scene.) I recognize that psychological analysis of politics is usually not welcome by the public, but I believe such a perspective can be helpful here to understand Palin’s message. In her acceptance speech Gov. Palin sent a rousing call to those who want to celebrate their resistance to change and a higher vision
We have no choice - but for electing Obama
